man. Think of this for a moment—this was his last night in a Texas uniform; he was undefeated and ready to take his team into battle one last time. Sadly it did not have the storybook ending so many of us are accustomed to, especially considering the fact this game was in the cradle of Hollywood where all movies end with the hero hoisted onto the shoulders of his teammates and carried off the field. This, however, was not the ending God had scripted from eternity past, but one that is best for this young man. Let us take a moment to put this into perspective to better enable us to understand the complete sense of loss this young man felt.

He returned for his senior year with but one goal—not to win the Heisman, which he finished in the top three voting the past two years—to win a National Championship. He led his Texas Longhorns to 45 victories and leaves as the winningest quarterback in not only the state of Texas, not only in the Big 12 Conference but also in all of NCAA history. Even better than our beloved Tim Tebow. Along the way, he broke nearly every record in school history. He was set for a showdown with destiny; to enter the Rose Bowl corral and shoot it out with the opposition to then ride off on horseback into the sunset of his college career. Instead, on the fifth play of the game, just two minutes into the game he is injured in a hit that even he admitted he has taken hundreds of times. 

At the end of the game, he faced the cameras and asked to comment on the situation. Yes, he was emotional—and no I do not hold this against him—but he took a moment to collect himself. He spoke of the great effort his team displayed, complimented backup quarterback Garret Gilbert on a job well done, and congratulated Alabama. To this point, this is what is scripted and expected, take the focus off you, and put it on others. It was his last statement that prompted this note. He gave praise to God and acknowledged Him in this circumstance. While I cannot remember his exact words, he stated he would never question God that he was a man of faith, and that no matter what he was firmly planted on “the Rock.” Many are quick to thank God when they win, but very few even mention him when something bad happens. Are we not to praise Him in all things? “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18. He had every right to stand there and complain, to express sour grapes but he did not. He put the game into perspective and praised his heavenly father.

I must admit that in my daily struggles that some of you are privy to; I do not give God all the praise and glory as I should. It is difficult when we look at the circumstance and try to praise Him; it is then we should shift our gaze heavenward and look past the circumstance. It took a young man from Texas to put this in perspective for me. I will finish with a wonderful Psalm “Because your love is better than life, my lips will praise you.”

Earlier today I answered a poll on whether I was “Pro-Choice” or “Pro-Life”; I voted Pro-Life. This issue has divided our country from Liberals and Conservatives to Parents and Children. Everyone has an opinion and is steadfast in their beliefs. That is fine. I would rather someone be completely sold out for what they believe than someone who agrees only because everyone else is doing it.

Over the years, I have read many articles and even had the privilege of meeting individuals who are alive today because their parents decided not to listen to the doctor and abort, but rather listen to God and remain obedient. I even heard the testimony of a young lady who survived an abortion attempt. Because of the attempt, she has severe physical disabilities but praises God that she is alive. Anyway, I would like to relate the story of a family that faced a devastating decision: to abort a baby or bring the baby to term and deliver.

The parents met in college; him a sophomore and her a freshman. A year later they went on their first date at a football game. Shortly after that they were engaged and within two years of their first date, were married. They moved overseas and within a few years, quickly became the parents of four children. They, however, wanted one more and started praying that God give them one more child.

Shortly before learning she was pregnant, the mother of four fell into a coma after contracting amoebic dysentery--a bacteria transmitted through contaminated drinking water. The treatment for such a condition is a series of strong medications. After coming out of the coma, she discontinued the pharmaceutical regimen and received devastating news from her physician. The meds had damaged the fetus.

She was told that she suffered a placental abruption, a condition in which the placenta detaches from the uterine wall which in turn deprives the fetus of oxygen and nutrients. Doctors recommended that she abort the fetus because there was a ninety-eight percent chance the fetus would be stillborn. Additionally, if the fetus remained, it could cause her additional health problems. Should the fetus live, it would not ever walk, talk, or be able to provide for itself.

The parents never wavered in their faith. They believed that if God answered their prayers to have one more child, He would see them through this situation and they were willing to trust Him. In the seventh month of pregnancy, the mother traveled to the country’s capital and received around-the-clock care from an American-trained physician.

Tim Tebow, 2007 Heisman Winner

For two months she and her husband prayed for a healthy baby while she remained on bed rest. Then on 14 AUG 87, their baby was born. The mother said he was long and skinny and alive. Today he is 22 years old stands over 6’3” and weighs in at 235 pounds. He has accomplished a lot in his young life. He has excelled in numerous activities and was the only college sophomore to win a prestigious award. He is well-spoken and does not finish a conversation without saying “God Bless”. Last year, after experiencing a difficult situation he made a promise that a lot of good will come out of this. I think God makes that same promise to us when we are in difficult situations, such as struggling with a decision to abort or save a life. If you listen, you can hear His soft voice saying “A lot of good will come out of this”.

You might not have heard this story if his mother listened to man instead of God. He would have been just another abortion statistic. Oh, the boy’s name is Timothy Richard Tebow; University of Florida Quarterback, Heisman Trophy Winner, and most probably the best on-field leader of all time. God Bless.
