Then You Might Know

If you have ever mounted your rack, said “G’nite Chesty Puller wherever you are”, prayed, then slept in the position of attention…

Then you might know what it means to serve as a United States Marine.

If you have ever been asked “Whose hand is on that weapon?”….

If you have ever stood on the yellow foot prints…

If your Drill Instructor misunderstood your girlfriend’s name and called her Suzy Rotten Crotch…

If you knew what Suzy was doing with Jody….

If you know the difference in spelling between the Island and the French city…

If you have ever pulled “pits”….

If you have ever received a five-five-six hickey…

If you have ever been told “stand by to stand by”….

If you have ever been sent to the rose garden….

If you have ever taken part in a Chinese field day…

If you know where “The Rock” is…

If you have ever experienced “the suck”…

If you know the acronyms BAMCIS, BRASSF, SMEAC, SALUTE…

If you have ever done a “Side Straddle Hop”…

If you have ever received individual instruction on the quarter deck…

If you were proud you were not a POG…

If your definition of MSG is not MonoSodium glutamate…

If you have carried either ALICE or MOLLE on your back…

If you have ever slept on a rubber bitch…

If you know where 29 Stumps is located…

If you have ever used the phrase “Big Green Weenie” and BOHICA in the same sentence…

If you know the answer to “what keeps a chicken’s butt from dragging the ground?”[i]

If you use terms rack, ladder-well, deck, hatch, head, porthole, and bulkhead…

If you have ever allowed “John Wayne” to open your meal….

If you know the difference between your rifle and your gun…

If you know which of the above is for shootin’ and which is for fun…

If you know all the “deuces”, (Ma deuce, deuce and a half, four-deuce, deuce gear)….

If you have ever been called a Devil Dog, Gyrene, Jarhead or Leatherneck…

It you have ever saluted a CPO/SCPO/MCPO because you saw brass/silver on the collar…

If you know the true origin of OOH-RA[ii]….

If you still know the words to the Marine’s Hymn after leaving the Corps…

If you are able to adapt, improvise, and overcome…

If you can still name your Senior and other Drill Instructors…

If you have ever heated your chow on a vehicle engine…

If you get a lump in your throat when you hear the National Anthem…

If you have ever self-reported your actions…

If you understand Honor, Courage, and Commitment…

If you live by the creed Semper Fidelis…

If you have ever reassured a “hit” Marine he will see his family again…

If you have ever been down range, away from your family, eating a cold MRE while lying in a cold, muddy hide on Christmas…

If you continue giving your all, remaining “always faithful”, protecting this country from all enemies regardless of what Congress does to your pay and benefits…

Then you might know what it means to serve as a United States Marine.

If you know a Marine either still serving or not, give them a hug and kiss, buy them a round, and tell 'em thank you for serving.

[i] Asked by “airborne” or jump-qualified Marines (either static-line or freefall parachute). The answer is a “pair of dirty stinking LEGs”. This differentiates those Marines with “wings” from those without, or LEGs.
[ii] Marines of 1st Amphibious Reconnaissance Co., during the Korean War were often transported to remote beaches for insertion and traveled via submarines. The klaxon call signaling “DIVE, DIVE, DIVE” prompted the Recon Marines to start imitating the “Aarugha” call, often called “barking”. The Marines eventually morphed this into OOH-RAH. Sometime in the late 70s, the motivational call migrated from Recon Marines into the Fleet.

I Have Accepted—

My vision has blurred, but my sight has sharpened.
My body has softened, but my resolve has hardened.
My muscles have weakened, but my faith has strengthened.

I realize the man represented in my profile pic is long gone. It was taken just moments before my health changed on 31 JUL 94.

I have accepted—
—I will never again dive beneath the oceans.
—I will never again glide to earth under a parachute.
—I will never again plunge thru Class V rapids.

But because of my health—
—laughter is sweeter.
—hugs more compassionate.
—'I love yous' more meaningful.

I have experienced the depths of sorrow and the heights of joy. I have suffered unimaginable pain to then be comforted with soothing words of support.

Before everyone gets involved with the activities of Christmas, I wanted to say thank you for all those that have checked on me, prayed for me, flirted with me, encouraged me, debated me, etc. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, blessing filled Happy New Year.

Just Another Band Out of Boston

Author. Christmas Ball 1977.
It was the fall of 1976. I was entering my sophomore year at the home of the Mighty Milton Panthers in Milton, FL. I was asked to serve “cokes” at the Christmas Ball at Baghdad Elementary School. It was my first ever dance—although I was too afraid to actually get on the dance floor—but I was able to watch all the pretty girls from the safety of my vending booth and listen to music in stereo. The truck only had one AM speaker and one could not really appreciate music from its tinny monaural speaker but Paul Harvey sounded great. It was here at this dance I fell in love with “just another band out of Boston”. I heard “More Than a Feeling” for the first time and it remains my favorite Boston song to this day.

Debut Album Cover.
At the time I knew what “sounded” good but did not fully appreciate music. Through the years I began to understand why Boston “sounded” so much different than other great groups of the time such as Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was the harmonizing vocals, the layered guitars, and the manner in which they recorded their songs. Tom Scholz, the founding member studied classical piano as a child and later earned both a BSME and MSME from MIT—those are two engineering degrees—undergrad and graduate—in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (His son would later graduate from MIT with a BSME.) He wrote most of the songs on their self-titled debut album Boston. He played most of the instruments and recorded them individually on their own “tracks” then layered them to achieve the sound we easily recognize as Boston.

L-R Barry Goodreau, Tom Scholz, Sid Hashian, Brad Delp, and
Fran Sheehan, in 1977.
Accompanying Scholz was a local singer and guitarist (who also played harmonica and keyboards) Brad Delp. If Scholz was responsible for the music behind Boston, Delp was the voice out front. His range from soothing harmonizing to the “wow, he must have some tight britches” high tenor, help redefine rock music. With their long lists of hits from the iconic ‘More Than a Feeling’, to ‘Foreplay/Long Time’, the band Boston rewrote the book on lyrical composition, musical instruments (layered guitars), and technical recording equipment.

Through each of their successive albums, their sound is easily recognized. Many thought there would never be another Boston album after Delp’s death (suicide) on 09 MAR 07. But even before his death, Delp and Scholz were in the basement laying down tracks. On 03 DEC 13, Boston will release a new album Life, Love & Hope. In a recent interview, Scholz described how he stayed true to the Boston sound. “They (songs) have all been meticulously recorded to analog tape on the same machines and equipment used for Boston’s hits for the past 35 years. Sometimes even the same amps and instruments”. (Incidentally, Scholz who is infamous for his basement recordings invented The Rockman, which allows musicians to record at home and not spend money on expensive studio time while still achieving studio sound quality results. He sold the company years ago for a nice profit. He is credited as one of the pioneers in home recording technology and making the process of cutting an album less costly and easier.)

The first single "Heaven On Earth" has been released on their website and
Heaven On Earth Album Cover.
YouTube to give you a taste of the music on the album. Based on this taste, I cannot wait to get more. For me, the song provides a musical link between today and the sounds of the 70s—the time of my youth. As I have mentioned in past writings, certain songs or artists bring to mind specific people. When I hear Jackson Browne or Chicago, I think of Kim Watson. Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded” reminds me of Kerrie Shaw and all the times we danced to that song. (I finally overcame my fear of the dance floor with a little help from a Gentleman from Tennessee, Mr. Jack Daniel. He, however, takes no credit for my movements that some have described as a cross between a dying snake and a frog’s leg attached to a battery.) Christopher Cross’ “Sailing” is all Suzy Timmons. Songs and artists from the 60s like Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” and Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” brings Patti Peacher to mind. Lynyrd Skynyrd reminds me of Jeff Roberts and his "Smokey and the Bandit" Black Trans-Am Firebird (strange how all other songs remind me of girls and this one of Big Un). However, when I hear Boston, it is all Jill Garlock. Needless to say, I love Boston.

Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It’s more than a feeling…

Figures and Words

Remember when the 42nd President William Jefferson Blythe Clinton said, "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is"? According to Clinton oral sex is not sex. Forget the fact that sex is part of the words describing the act. When you are forcing your position, you change definitions.
President Bill Clinton.

Then we have this administration continuing the trend by labeling the Ft. Hood terrorist attack as Work-Place Violence, and the Boston bombings as Man-Caused Disasters.

So is it any stretch of the imagination that now all the problems with Obamacare—wait, this signature piece of legislation that even the President embraced as Obamacare because “Obama does care” is now being referred to exclusively by the Left as the Affordable Care Act—the administration would start changing their story? We are learning they knew all along you could not keep your plan; as early as APR 2013 there would be problems with the rollout and just last week we learned 60 to 70 percent of the build was not complete. That is okay, these massive problems were focused grouped and the term deemed least alarming is the now popular word “glitches”. If only NASA would have told us Space Shuttle Challenger experienced a "glitch" we would have felt better.

This legislation that the President and his Lieutenants from Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) to then Sec. of State Hillary Clinton and even VP Joe Biden said time and again, “If you like your health insurance, you can keep it. Period”. The President is on record saying this 29 times, the most recent just weeks before “the law of the land” went live. Now they are saying, “Well everyone knew not all the plans would have survived the grandfather clause. Those that did not were “sub-par” and less than 5% of the population is impacted.” The numbers are insignificant. I guess, they like those odds.

If we were living in a fantasy world where “liar, liar pants on fire” was an actuality, they would be wearing asbestos undergarments, because they did not “misspeak”. The main reason Hillarycare failed in the 1990s was due to the fear people would lose their existing health insurance plans. Regardless, these same subpar insurance plans that need to be replaced are now “okay” because the President by Executive Order told the Insurance companies to un-cancel them. Sort of like having a building that is 70% demolished and the “architect” tells them to put it back the way it was and they only have 20 days to do so.

There are numerous problems with both the website and the “Affordable Care Act”, but let us focus on the 5% number the administration keeps mentioning. It is, in their opinion an insignificant amount and we should not be concerned. Imagine for a moment what 5% means—in real numbers.

The population of the US is 315,000,000. The administration argues that 30 million are without healthcare (this includes Illegal Aliens but they deny this fact, but for a moment let’s accept it). Removing 30 million from 315 million leaves 285,000,000. Now take 5% of that number. That leaves 14,250,000 with a canceled policy. Yeah, that is an insignificant number.

What if hospitals dropped 5% of new births? In 2012, there were 3,958,000 live births, so 5% means 197,900 babies dropped. Do you like those odds?

What if airlines killed 5% of passengers flying domestically each year? The past three years' daily average is 1.5 million, which yields 547,500,000/year and 5% would be 27,375,000. Do you like those odds?

What if in 1960, the total Black population only accounted for 5% instead of 10.5% of US population (18,900,000:179,300,000 vs 8,965,000:179,300,000), would the Civil Rights Movement have stalled or even failed to start because the number was deemed “insignificant”?

But wait, there is a massive movement to grant special privileges, enact hate crime legislation, and special legislation for homosexuals which only account for 3.5 to 4 percent of the population. Not even 5%. One could draw a logical conclusion it is more important to have hate crime legislation for 3.5% of the population (if they were ever involved in a violent attack towards them) than to be concerned with 5% having a product/service they chose of their own free will and believed it provided them value to be canceled because of the administration’s legislation.

Dr. Obama and Mr. Hide
Numbers make Figures. Letters make Words.  Figures and Words. This administration is minimizing each. Do not allow them to get away with this; hold them accountable. All too often we fail to hold our elected representatives accountable. Get involved locally. Write your councilman. Call your state representatives. Email your US Representative and US Senators. Tell them in clear, concise language what you think. Do not be ambiguous; no double-talk. Just get involved.

To think it all started with a two-letter word: IS.

Powerful, Poignant, Prophetic

“What you are about to read is presented in the form of a story, but what is contained within the story is real”. Jonathan Cahn. These were the opening words of Cahn’s 2012 book, The Harbinger: The Ancient Mystery That Holds the Secret of America’s Future.

As either a companion or stand alone DVD, The Harbinger Decoded is a must watch for every person in the United States. Jonathan Cahn, a Messianic Rabbi, was led to write the book and “gave it to God” to get it published. It has stayed at the top of many “Best Sellers” lists since it was released. This DVD is powerful, poignant, and prophetic.

The premise of the book and documentary is based on Isaiah 9:10, “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.” Cahn draws a parallel between a prophecy originally intended for Israel, and the events of 9/11 on the United States of America.

The DVD documentary follows the book and explains each of the harbingers (a person or thing that announces the coming of another) of Isaiah 9:10 and how each of them happened starting with the terrorist’s attack of 9/11. The harbingers are warnings from God to this country—America—to repent from our sinful ways. We have forgotten and even turned away from our spiritual foundations. Instead of repenting, we continue to rebel, which, I believe will lead to our (America’s) ultimate downfall.

While the book is a work of “fiction”, it is based on fact. Cahn provides supporting, evidentiary material for each of his points. The book can be a bit hard to follow at times, but the DVD makes it easy. Cahn explains each of the harbingers in an easy to understand manner. I actually wanted more from the DVD, but I understand why he chose not to make it a “bible study”. The DVD does a great job of bringing the pages of the book to “life” with actual images of the events and places detailed in the book.

Whether you are a Christian and want to see tangible examples of God’s inerrant word, or an atheist or even agnostic, this DVD is one you should take the time to watch. If you are not a believer, view this through the perspective of the writings of Nostradamus or some other futurists. Someone nearly 3,000 years ago “foretold” of these events, and now they have “come true”.

The DVD lists and explains each of the Nine Harbingers (1. The Breach 2. The Terrorist 3. The Bricks 4. The Tower 5. The Gazit Stone 6. The Sycamore Tree 7. The Erez Tree 8. The Utterance 9. The Prophecy). It also explains the importance of the Sabbatical year—Shemita (this is an economic judgment of a nation that happens on Elul 29 in Jewish or Hebrew Calendar. This is a significant event. On 17 SEP 01, just six days after 9/11, stocks fell nearly 700 points (681.81) or 7%. On the very next Elul 29, which occurred on 29 SEP 08, the NYSE exchange bell did not ring (watch video); stocks fell 777.7 points or 7%. That’s a lot of 7’s showing up. Incidentally, the next Elul 29 is 13 SEP 15; wonder what will happen then? There are several other extras included in the documentary plus a Bonus Section. This is an excellent DVD and well worth the price.

As I said earlier, every American needs to watch this DVD. I recommend buying the book as well. You might also buy a few copies of each for those on your Christmas list.

The Era of Big Government is Over

As you wake this morning, you are undoubtedly hearing the world is ending, the sky is falling
and there is no Santa Claus. Worse than that—if you are listening to some—the “anarchists” have shutdown the US Government and so doing they have loosed the Hounds of Hell and sent the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse on a mission to destroy the world.

What does this mean?

To many middle-aged individuals we can remember all of the shutdowns starting in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter through the last shutdown in 1996 under President Bill Clinton. In all of the previous shutdowns, all three entities (President, House of Representatives and Senate) work together to arrive at a budget for the next Fiscal Year (FY). The government’s Fiscal Year runs from 01 OCT through 30 SEP of the following year.

Our Constitution gives Congress control on how federal money is spent in an attempt to limit the power of the president. The government can only spend money “in consequence of appropriations made by law”.

United States Constitution requires Congress with the approval of the President, to authorize all federal expenditures. This is accomplished by producing a budget proposal that consists of three parts (1) Total Government expenditures (defense, social programs, federal aid to foreign entities, etc) (2) Total Government income (from taxes and other sources of income like fees and enrollment premiums) (3) Total Net Difference between the two. More income to expenses—a surplus. More expense to income—a deficit. It is important to note the Budget Process starts with the President submitting to Congress his vision of what he wants to accomplish. A Budget.

The President must submit—as required by The Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 (BAA)— by the first Monday of February his budget for consideration for the next FY. President Obama has missed this deadline in four of the five years of his presidency. Obama is the only President in the 92 years of BAA, to miss the deadline two years in a row and then three years in a row. He also holds the record for longest delay at 98 days.

President Barak Obama (D)
Budget Submission Required Date and Submitted Date
02 FEB 09        11 MAY 09
01 FEB 10        01 FEB 10        (Failed Senate 0-97)
07 FEB 11        14 FEB 11
06 FEB 12        13 FEB 12        (Failed House 0-414)
04 FEB 13        25 MAR 13
No budget passed since 2007.

When Congress and the President fail to pass a Budget, they then pass a Continuing Resolution or CR. What is a Continuing Resolution (CR)? Anytime government fails to pass a regular budget, it may pass legislation to fund critical aspects of government until a formal appropriations bill is signed into law. We have been operating under a CR since 2008.

Shutdowns by the Numbers

18 shutdowns since 1976 (including present)
109 total days (excluding present)
6.4 days average per shutdown (excluding present)
9 under a Democratic President
9 under a Republican President
9 where same party controlled both House and Senate
3 with Democratic President and Republican House majority
9 with Republican President and Democratic House majority
5 with Democratic President and Democratic House and Senate majority
0 with Republican President and Republican House and Senate majority

Interesting note. The Democrats are quick to remind everyone that it was Bill Clinton that provided a surplus and had a balanced budget. What they conveniently fail to say, it was because of the Republican controlled House and Senate that forced a government shutdown in an effort to have a balanced budget. After the budget battle, President Clinton moved to the center and had a good relationship with Congress. In his 1996 State of the Union Address, he said,

We must answer here three fundamental questions: First, how do we make the American Dream of opportunity for all a reality for all Americans who are willing to work for it? Second, how do we preserve our old and enduring values as we move into the future? And, third, how do we meet these challenges together, as one America?

We know big government does not have all the answers. We know there’s not a program for every problem. We have worked to give the American people a smaller, less bureaucratic government in Washington. And we have to give the American people one that lives within its means.

The era of big government is over.”

Of specific importance is the role the President has in the budget process. It starts with him and his Budget submission and he must be involved when an impasse is reached. He must be willing to act as referee between the House and Senate and willing to negotiate when one or both disagree with his budget. President Obama has vowed he will not negotiate. He sees no reason to negotiate. In 2009, shortly after taking office in his first term Obama told Republicans during stimulus-bill discussions that “elections have consequences”. He believes that since he was elected and since re-elected, the people have spoken and want whatever he thinks is best. This is evidenced in his comment during an NPR interview yesterday when asked "What can you offer?". "What can I offer?--I shouldn't have to offer anything. They're not doing me a favor...."

In each of the other shutdowns, the sitting President negotiated; of note is President Reagan with Speaker O’Neill and President Clinton and Speaker Gingrich. As noted in the above reference to Clinton’s State of the Union Address, he worked with Congress and had great success doing so. It is important to consider his comments referencing “Big Government”. He acknowledges that Government is not the answer to all problems. Furthermore, every American should be treated fairly and have equal opportunity. Today, we have a President and Senate that believe if left to their own wisdom; the public does not have sense enough to come in from the rain and needs Government to help them in all areas of their lives.

Speaker John Boehner (R)
The sound bites from the differing representatives are on opposite ends with ACA in the middle. Republicans do not want to advance ACA when it is unfairly administered. Congress, and other government employees receive subsidies the rest of Americans do not receive. Friends of the Administration have received exemptions for their companies from the ACA, while opponents were denied. They simply want “fairness”. However, I submit this is not only a stance against unfair practices enacted by this administration; it is a stance against government intrusion into our lives. It is about spending more than we take in taxes and revenue. It is about limiting government. Sadly, I think President Clinton’s declaration “The era of Big Government is over”, was wrong. It has rebounded and is larger than ever.

Regardless, of the political debate, we are in the midst of a shutdown. True to form, President Obama and his minions are attempting to scare the public. Remember sequester? He and his administration told of all the horror stories of no TSA agents, no White House tours, National Parks closed indefinitely—he wanted the sequester to hurt. With the shutdown, they said veterans will not be able to get health care because VA hospitals will be closed. Those needing medical care and medication for PTSD will be turned away. WRONG! Single mothers will not have any money to buy groceries for her family. WRONG!

How will the shutdown impact me?

God Helps Those That Help Themselves

Without timely, accurate data making the best decision is nearly impossible. Without knowing where we have come, we cannot find where we are going. Back in our days of middle and high school, we lugged huge textbooks home—without the aid of a backpack—to study. These books had information on Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus), English (grammar and literature), Science (biology, chemistry, physics) and Social Studies (Psychology, Sociology, Geography, and History). As a kid I loved the books. I enjoyed the pictures, graphs, and reading about the world. I and other students had to read/study the material provided by the teacher and information contained within the textbooks. We were graded on how well our answers matched the teacher’s notes and textbook. With my limited knowledge, I trusted what my teacher taught and what I read in the textbooks. But what if the teacher taught the wrong information? What if the information contained within the textbooks was wrong? As a society, we could make poor decisions.

Israel is not listed on map. Instead listed as Occupied Palestine.
I am sure you have heard how “some” are rewriting history from Muslims discovering America to Jerusalem being an Arab city. One has even removed Israel and renamed it “Occupied Palestine” from a map of the Middle East. They have rewritten (distanced) the close ties of the Democratic Party with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and have portrayed the Democratic Party as the party that championed Civil Rights. They fail to mention that it was a Democrat Commissioner of Public Safety (Eugene “Bull” Connor”) that turned the fire hoses and dogs on blacks in Birmingham, AL. They fail to mention it was a Democratic Alabama Governor (George C. Wallace, Jr.) that stood in the doorway to prevent black students from registering at the University of Alabama. They exclude the work the Republican Party, which was the party of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, and Susan B. Anthony. It was the Republican Party that passed the Civil Rights Acts of 1875, 1957, 1960, and 1964. This is a blatant attempt to rewrite and cast the Republican Party as anti-black and by extension anti-minority.

Guyer High School Revised Ten Amendments
More recently we have this example from Guyer High School in Denton, TX. Take a look at both the First and Second Amendments in United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Exam[i]. The first is the textbook (red) and the second is the original (blue).

First Amendment: Congress may make no laws that infringe a citizen’s right to freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Congress may not favor one religion over another (separation of church and state). Emphasis added.

First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The phrase “separation of church and state” does not appear in the Constitution. The First Amendment contains the “Establishment Clause”. The Establishment Clause prohibits government—either Federal or State—from making any laws “respecting an establishment of religion.” The government cannot establish an official religion—remember Church of England—and cannot unduly favor one religion for another. Finally, it prohibits government from giving preference for religion to non-religion, or more importantly, giving preference for non-religion to religion. It does NOT mean you cannot pray in public schools, or opening Congress and Senate sessions with an invocation. Sadly, the Chief Justice of Alabama was ordered by a U. S. District Judge to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the Alabama Judicial Building opining the monument “crossed the line”. The decision indicated the monument in the Judicial Building gave preference to one religion over another. However, the same Ten Commandments hang on the walls of the Supreme Court of the United States. No consistency.

Second Amendment: The people have the right to keep and bear arms in a state militia. Emphasis added.

Second Amendment: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Based on the wording of this text, a citizen only has the right to bear arms while serving in a “state militia”. Several decisions handed down from the SCOTUS have reaffirmed citizens the right to bear arms in McDonald v. Chicago (2010)  and is not dependent on serving in a “state militia” in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). In Presser v. Illinois (1886), it provided further clarification that any restriction of Second Amendment is on Government not "the people".

In a response, the school system stated this was a supplemental textbook but the primary text contained the correct information. Furthermore, all of the Amendments were “simplified” but the others did not contain any major errors or editorials.

Other Examples

Prentice Hall in their textbook World History[ii] devotes an entire chapter to Islam including sections on the rise of Islam and the building of the Muslim empire. There are NO chapters for either Christianity or Judaism, but are referenced in embedded paragraphs. The editors describe Jesus is a “self-proclaimed” Messiah, but definitively declares Muhammad a prophet.

Texas Education Service Center Curriculum (TESCCC) made a major change in “World History Unit
Remembering 9/11--Remix style.
12 Lesson 07” optional lesson on terrorism, when it compared the Boston Tea Party to “an act of terrorism”. They also answered the question "why might the US be a target for terrorism?" with "decisions we made in the US have had negative effects on people elsewhere". In other words, we brought this on ourselves. This is like blaming the woman that was raped because she wore a low-cut blouse a was "asking for it".

To be more politically correct and in an attempt to not alienate females and transgenders, Teachers Curriculum Institute (TCI) in History Alive! America’s Past[iii] changed the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” The TCI version reads: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal…”

Do not misunderstand my motives. I am a firm believer in both education and continuous improvement. We should expect our students have the most correct information and minimize the number of errors in the textbooks. I also understand the purpose and use of “nationalization” in which different countries view world events through national lenses. A textbook written and published in USA differs from one from United Kingdom recounting the American Revolution. Textbooks in Germany, Japan, and Italy have a different “slant” to World War II than USA, UK, France, Australia, and Russia. We expect this. But, we should not play favorites. We should not try to rewrite history so it is more palatable. History is bloody. History is violent. We must make sure we know our past. If we are not careful, left to those with an agenda, History is a weapon. The wrong information either found in a textbook or taught in a classroom does not provide a well-rounded education. If you say the wrong or inaccurate thing long enough, people start believing it. Don’t believe me? Find in the Bible the phrase, “God helps those that help themselves”. It is not in any of the canonized works of the Christian Bible.

According to a 2002 Columbia Law School Study, nearly two-thirds of respondents polled thought the phrase “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” came from the Constitution, or at least written by the Framers of the Constitution. Sadly, it was not written by any of the Framers, it was not even written by an American. Instead it was written by a German. Karl Marx wrote the phrase in his 1875 The Critique of the Gotha Program. Essentially, it is the Executive Summary of the principles of Communism.

ALLAHU AKBAR!

Avenge December 7 (Pearl Harbor)
Never Forget 9/11 (NYC, DC, Shanksville, PA)
???? 9/11 2012 (Benghazi)

WWII Battle Cry Poster.
For every major battle or attack on our sovereign ground, where American soil ran red from the blood of killed Americans, we have had a rallying or “Battle Cry” such as “Remember the Alamo”. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the blue-green water was stained blood red, the Nation pulled together in a shared spirit of Espirit de Corps to “Avenge December 7”. From recruiting offices, to train stations and even on factory floors, posters were hung to remind us what we were fighting for.

A Battle Cry said either in unison or simply as an individual mantra solidifies ones resolve. It provides energy when you cannot take another step. It can be a word, a phrase or even an inarticulate word such as the Marine Corps’ OORAHHHH! A battle cry serves to rally those in battle and remind them why they are fighting. It also extends to those that support the troops and a nation as a whole. The etymology of the words “battle cry” is common to both “motto” and “slogan”. Such as, “Don’t Tread on Me” (used by Continental Marines and others during American Revolution), “Be Prepared” (Boy Scouts of America) “In God We Trust” (United States of America), “We Dare to Defend Our Rights” (Alabama State Motto). They are also important in the business world, but known as slogans. We all recognize slogans such as “I’m Lovin’ It” (McDonalds), “Just Do It” (Nike), and “Where Dreams Come True” (Walt Disney World). They also extend to political campaigns, like “Forward”.

On September 11, 2001 a group of men hijacked four jets and flew them into each of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and if not for the brave men and women aboard Flight 93 crashing the plane into the countryside of Shanksville, PA either the US Capital or even the White House would have been destroyed. Since then we have vowed to “Never Forget”. I and many like me will never forget the cowardice act that these men and the religion they represent, perpetrated upon innocent human beings. They believe that everyone must profess Islam as the true religion, and if you do not you should die. No other religion requires such acts. They continue to attack the world in general and the USA and Israel specifically.

One year ago today 9/11 2012, Muslim men attacked our consulate in Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. As yet we do not have an official battle cry for Benghazi, because we are a divided nation. Many (not all) on the Left have no idea what happened; those that do have no burning desire to pursue the issue. You know why? This administration, with assistance from the mainstream media has not led the charge to bring these attackers to justice. Between outright lies about a video, to differing and

changing stories, to slow rolling FBI investigation, to hiding witnesses, this Administration has not done much to right this wrong. Once again, US soil ran red with American blood—the blood of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith (Information Management Officer), Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. Both Doherty and Woods were former USN SEALs. We need to find, apprehend, try, and prosecute the killers to the fullest extent of miltary law. We need a battle cry for Benghazi; I believe “Remember Benghazi” is fitting. We need something done. We need in the words of Nike "JUST DO IT". We need to change the only battle cry that was heard during the eight hour Battle in Benghazi—the Battle Cry of our enemy as they rallied to kill Americans—they cried

"Look How Credible USA Is!"

Map of Syria
Unless you have been in a coma, you have heard the President and Secretary of State John Kerry present their case for a limited strike against President Bashar al-Assad and his administration in Syria. This is in response to a purported Chemical Weapon (CW) attack by the al-Assad regime on innocent civilians. Many Americans, as well as people around the world have a lot of questions.

(1)   Where is Syria?
(2)   Why were the civilians killed?
(3)   Who killed them
(4)   Were chemical weapons used?
(5)   What started “this”?
(6)   Who is al-Assad fighting?
(7)   What should the US and world do?

Before we can answer those questions, we need a short primer on (1) Islam (2) Middle East countries and location (3) Key groups or factions (4) Militia groups.

First, a few simple but important facts:
(1)   Muslim is NOT a race. It is the name given to those that practice Islam.
(2)   Not all Muslims are Arabs.
(3)   Not all Arabs are Muslims.

The Beginning

The saga begins nearly 6,000 years ago. God promised Abram that he would make him “the father of a great nation”. Abram (exalted Father) later renamed Abraham (Father of many) and his wife Sarai (little princess) later renamed Sarah (princess or noblewoman) were old and did not have any children but God had promised he would be the father of many people. [His nephew was captured and taken prisoner along with his entire household. Abram made chase, then caught and slaughtered the Elamite King Chedorlaomer at Hobah, just north of Damascus]. Doubting God, Sarah told Abraham to sleep with their maid servant Hagar (once forsaken, now rewarded). They had one child; a son named Ishmael (God has harkened). God told Hagar he—Ishmael—“shall be a wild ass of a man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren”. Thirteen years later, Abraham and Sarah had their own son, Isaac (he laughs). Sarah grew jealous of Hagar and Ishmael and had Abraham banish them to the desert. Ishmael’s descendants through his 12 sons would later form the Bedouin and Arab nations and Isaac’s would be the Israelites, the Jewish nation. Abraham was the grandfather of both.

In 610 AD, Muhammad (praise worthy) claims the archangel Gabriel (Jibril) came to him and told him God wanted him to be his prophet. It was during his visits to Muhammad over 23 years that the text of the Qur’an or Koran was written. Upon Muhammad’s death there was a schism on who should be the next leader of the faith and questioned rightful succession of Muslim leadership—the Caliph.

The two differing arguments formed the basis for the two major sects of Islamic belief: the Sunnis and Shi’as (also known as Shi’ite). The Sunni Muslims wanted a new leader elected from those best suited and capable for the job. The name Sunni means “one who follows the traditions of the Prophet”. The Shi’a Muslims believed the leadership should remain within the Prophet’s family, those specifically appointed by him, or the Imams that God chooses. Their preference would be for Muhammad’s cousin/son-in-law to assume leadership. The name Shi’a, short for Shi’a t-Ali, means a group or supportive party of people. The Sunni Muslims were victorious.

Sunnis Muslims make up 85% of Muslims and are located from the Mid-East through Africa and into Indonesia. Shi’a Muslims make up the remaining 15% and are located in Iran, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Lebanon.

In addition to the rift between the two differing beliefs of Islam, there is an age old battle between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Between the Persians and Arabs. It is significant enough that the Arabs refer the to “Persian Gulf” as the Arab Gulf or simply “The Gulf”. None of their maps have “Persian” on them

Map of Middle East
Where is Syria?

Syria or more formally the Syrian Arab Republic is a country in the Middle East. It is bordered to the North by Turkey, Iraq to the East, Jordan and Israel to the South and Lebanon to the West. A portion of the country has a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.

The population of 22 to 22.5 million people is mostly Sunni Muslims. However, the ruling family—the al-Assads—is from a minority sect known as Alawites, a Shi’a Muslim sub-sect. Syria is a ethnically diverse country with an Arab majority and Kurdish and Armenian minorities. The majority (74%) is Sunni Muslim. The ruling family shares their Alawite beliefs with 5% of population. Christians (Christian Arabs) and Druze comprise 10% and 3% respectively.

Syria was once part of the Ottoman Empire until its demise in 1918 (after World War I). At that time the French began to occupy Syria and maintained an oppressing force until after World War II. It gained its independence in 1946 and then went through several regime changes, many by military coup. In 1970, Hafez al-Assad came to power and maintained his control until his death in 2000. Upon his death, his son Bashar assumed the presidency and continues to rule today.

Who is the al-Assad Family?

Bashar al-Assad is President and Commander in Chief of all Syria’s armed forces. He is the third child and served as a physician in the military. His specialty is Ophthalmology. His younger brother Maher Al-Assad commands Syria’s elite forces the Republican Guard and the Fourth Armored Division. Bashar assumed office from his father Hafez al-Assad who was president from 1971 till his death in 2000. The family name ‘al-Assad’ means “the Lion” in Arabic. Like their family namesake, they are fierce and are quick to use violence.
Former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad with his wife and children. Maher, Bashar, Bassel, Majid and Bushra.
President Bashar al-Assad and his father are known for their repressive nature. They have restricted and censored the press; dissidents were either captured, made to disappear or tortured and killed. In 1982, al-Assad’s father responded to a Muslim Brotherhood (Sunni Muslim) led uprising in Hama by leveling entire neighborhoods, killing thousands of civilians. Most had nothing to do with the uprising. For a modern timeline of Syria, please scroll down to bottom of post.

So what is going on now?

Since the Arab Spring of 2011,there have been over 100,000 deaths; the mostly Sunni population is trying to overthrow the al-Assad government (Shi’a) in a bloody civil war. Syrian refugees are estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 million having fled to bordering countries of Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. Those attempting to overthrow the government are called “the Rebels”. There have been three reported gas attacks.
03 DEC 2012 Gas attack in city of Homs—“several” killed.
19 MAR 2013 Gas attack near city of Aleppo—more than 150 killed.
            21 AUG 2013 Gas attack by al-Assad—over 1400 dead, including 400 children.

al-Assad and his supporters

Assad’s forces are strengthening. Hezbollah and Iranian al-Quds are training a new national defense force of 50,000 in addition to the standing strength of 180,000. Because of compulsory enlistment at age 18, and then remaining in Reserves until age 40 (this is subject to change depending on needs of military), it is difficult to determine the exact number.

Hezbollah (Party of God) Shi’a Islamic militant group based in Lebanon. Stands alongside al-Assad regime. Provides significant material/support for Hamas in its struggle against Israel. Has agreed to disagree with Hamas in Syria.

International Support for al-Assad Regime

Iran
(1)   Hates Israel and perceives Israel and the US as threats. It sends arms to Lebanon based militant group Hezbollah and Gaza based Hamas. It needs Syria to remain intact to facilitate arms to Hezbollah.
(2)   Is Shi’a Muslim, the same as ruling family of Syria.
(3)   Does not want Syria to become a member of Arab League.

Russia
(1)  Russia has a naval installation in Syria, that is strategically important and Russia’s last foreign military base outside of the former Soviet Union.
(2)  Russia especially Putin, still lives in the past and likes the Cold War so it stands opposite USA and its allies.
(3)  Russia does not like “international intervention” because it feels threatened by Western imperialism and does not want the USA shaping the middle-East.
(4)  Syria buys a lot of military exports, over $160 million a year and recently signed a deal for $550 million in fighter jets.

China
(1)   Financial. Is Syria’s third largest importer.
(2)   Ideology. Does not like the international community imposing itself in a sovereign nations business. Some believe, if this is allowed then what is to keep others from seeking similar actions against China.

The Rebels

Anti-government forces are divided by their competing interests and differing opinions regarding the shape of future government. As such there is no central command, no coordination, and do not fight as one cohesive force. Inasmuch there is no central Command, some argue Supreme Joint Military Command (led by General Salim Idriss, a Sunni defector from al-Assad’s army), tries to coordinate efforts. Rebels will sometimes fight each other and often times change allegiance.

Syrian National Council (SNC) is headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey and is linked to the Free Syrian Army, which is comprised mostly of defected Syrian Army soldiers. It seeks a more democratic government and freedom of press.

National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces is an interim government that would become the provisional government upon a successful coup. This is the group that is recognized internationally (including US) as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Militias
Free Syrian Army (military defectors) Approximately 80,000 fighters. Some intelligence sources have this number at 50,000. FSA largely made up of elements of the Sunni Wahhabis Islamic movement. Backed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Salafist groups (Sunni groups whose name means “the predecessors”)
Jabhat al-Nusra—Victory Front—believes in global jihad and uses suicide bombings. Over 6,000 men that are meticulously vetted. Most are from lower income, conservative Syrians. They get their weapons from al-Qaeda and funding from Iraq and other “private sources”. It has captured oil wells and grain silos.
Ahrar al-Sham—Freemen of Greater Syria—is slightly more moderate, but like Jabhat al-Nusra wants to impose strict Islamist state. Both of these groups are linked to Al-Qaeda.
Syrian Islamic Front 13,000 to 25,000 fighters. Demanding the formation of an Islamic state with Sharia law.

Liwa al-Tawhid in Aleppo

The Farouq Battalions (between Damascus and Aleppo, to Hasaka in NE)

Farouq Brigade It was from this group the video of a commander (Abu Sakkar) is seen taking a bite out of the still warm heart of a dead Syrian soldier.

Syrian Islamic Liberation Front 35,000 fighters. Fights with FSA. Shared goal of increasing influence of Islam and getting rid of al-Assad.

Hamas (Sunni) A Palestinian group, backed by Hezbollah and Iran in its struggle against Israel. It basically controls the Gaza Strip. It has backed the Rebels in Syria because funding from Iran has decreased. It is getting more money from Qatar.

al-Qaeda Extremist Islamic terrorists. Most extreme of the radical Sunni group. Members in Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Iraq. Have sworn support to Ayman al-Zawahiri. It has recruited hard line Jihadist and its members are battled tested and hardened warriors including the war in Chechnya.

International Support for Rebels
United States of America, United Kingdom and France have given their support to the rebels. Saudi Arabia and Qatar provide finance and supply weapons.

Saudi Arabia has been supporting Free Syrian Army (FSA) mainly financially allowing Qatar to facilitate movement and shipment of arms. The Saudis biggest and longest enemy is Iran. They quickly dismiss this as a Sunni/Shi’a rivalry and point toward the Arab/Persian conflict.

Others
Muslim Brotherhood (Sunni). This Sunni group has had a 30-year problem with the al-Assad regime. Bashar’s father Hafez quelled an uprising that lead to the massacre at Hama. The group’s leadership was either in exile, imprisoned, or killed. Egypt’s Islamic support base overthrew US backed President and friend of President Obama, Mohamed Morsi. With its vast international network, is supporting several rebel factions in Syria, including Hamas. Shi’a Iran is also trying to work with them although they are Sunni, only to the extent of spreading Islam in North Africa, pushing out all other religions (Coptic Christians, Christians, Orthodox Christians, and Jews)

Iran: Yes, it is also supporting The Rebels. It is supporting Hamas and to a lesser extent, the Muslim Brotherhood. It has two dogs in this hunt. No matter the outcome, Iran wins.

What are we to do?

President Barack Obama (D) and Secretary of State John Kerry (D) along with former Speaker Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and  Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) want to have “limited, proportional strategic” missile attacks. Since this was first given to Congress, there have been over 50 changes to the Pentagon’s attack plan. These changes coming from the White House and each successive plan is more aggressive from an original missile attack to now (at time of writing) using stealth aircraft to take out moving targets. Although, they maintain that none of the plans will include “boots on the ground”.

Contrary to what the President and Secretary of State maintain, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) General Martin E. Dempsey (USA) presented a battle plan that stated at least 75,000 “boots on the ground” are necessary to find, capture, defend and remove chemical weapons. Then we have the use of aircraft. If a US or allied aircraft is shot down, you then must launch a USAF CSAR (Combat Search And Rescue) or USMC TRAP (Tactical Recovery of Aircraft And Personnel) mission. For the USMC, it requires two CH-53K Super Sea Stallions with a crew of 4 each with 10 Marines and 1 (minimum) Navy Corpsman in each bird. Also, requires the escort of two AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters with a crew of 2 for each. That Mr. President is “boots on the ground”.

The President maintains that we must act because Assad used CWs. He first stated on 20 AUG 2012, that the use of CWs would be a “red line”. Below highlighted in RED are the references to red line used before President Obama used them on 20 AUG and the subsequent uses. After he used them on 20 AUG 2012, an administration official speaking on background said the President was to scare Assad but went further than anyone expected. He gave and off-the-cuff statement. Last week, he backed off the red line comment saying he did not make the red line but the world made the red line. I simply ask you to read his comments on the 20 AUG and his use of pronouns like “I” and “us” and you decide who set the red line.

While I am convinced CWs were used, I am not convinced they were used by Assad’s regime. What does he have to gain by using them? He and his army are winning the civil war. The location (Ghouta outside of Damascus) of the last attack was a residential area only a few hundred yards from a rebel stronghold. Why would he gas the civilians when he could have gassed the rebels? Also, the administration says they have “credible” proof that Assad is behind the attacks, but they will not provide that proof. All we have are YouTube videos of the people either dead or in taking their last labored breaths.

Why should we act now? Over 100,000 people have died in just over two years, why are the deaths of these 1,400 more important than the others? Is it the cause of their deaths? Because they died of gas instead of a bullet or a sword? What about all the deaths by gas during the Iran-Iraq war? What about Saddam Hussein gassing the Kurds? (The world did not know of this at the time, only years later.) What about the gas attack that killed Bosnian Muslims? It turned out that they killed their own in an attempt to garner sympathy from world leaders. If the attack in Ghouta was from a rocket, where are the pictures of individuals with shrapnel wounds? Where is the blood?

We do not have the facts of the situation, we only have what they want us to have. I do not know if this was a false flag op, or if Assad did use CW. Regardless, I do not think we need to respond with a military strike. Are we capable of such? Yes. But what do we say the day after the attack when we see pictures of torn and mutilated civilians that were just in the wrong place and the wrong time. Do we express our regrets to their loved ones and remind them their deaths were within “acceptable civilian casualties”? Do we respond so President Obama saves face if in fact he did speak “off-the-cuff”? President Obama in Sweden last week said, “My credibility is not on the line. The international community’s credibility is on the line. And America's and Congress’ credibility is on the line.” So Mr. President, do you think if you proceed with your attack, the headlines the next morning will read “Look how credible USA is!”?

Timeline of US Position On Syria

18 AUG 2011  First time Obama tells al-Assad to step down and leave.
04 FEB 2012    Russia and China rejects a UN Security Council resolution backing a democratic transition.
08 FEB 2012    Senators McCain (R-AZ), Graham (R-SC) and Lieberman (I-CT) urges Obama administration to consider providing arms to Syrian opposition.
05 MAR 2012  McCain is first lawmaker calling for military action (US led airstrikes).
27 MAR 2012  Mitt Romney (R) calls on Obama to provide arms to Rebels.
31 MAY 2012  Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary is asked after UN envoy Kofi Annan fails to broker a peace plan if there is a “red line” for al-Assad. He sidesteps the question.
13 JUL 2012    Pentagon Press Secretary George Little says use of CW would “cross a serious red line”. First time administration uses the term publicly.
17 JUL 2012    Josh Earnest, White House spokesman says administration is concerned about use of CW by al-Assad.
23 JUL 2012    Obama says al-Assad regime will be “held accountable” if it uses CW.
11 AUG 2012  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) in Istanbul says it is clear to the al-Assad regime the use of CWs is a “a red line for the world”.
20 AUG 2012  Obama for the first time uses “red line”. “I have, at this point, not ordered military engagement in the situation. But the point that you made about chemical and biological weapons is critical. That’s an issue that doesn't just concern Syria; it concerns our close allies in the region, including Israel. It concerns us. We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people. We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation. We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region that that’s a red line for us and that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons. That would change my calculations significantly” (Emphasis is mine.)
28 SEP 2012    Defense Secretary Leon Panetta states most CWs stockpiles are secure, but smaller caches are being moved around and US intelligence cannot account for all of them.
03 DEC 2012   Obama giving a speech at National Defense University again warns al-Assad over use of CWs. “If you…use (sic) these weapons, there will be consequences…you will be held accountable”. On same day in Prague, Sec. Clinton US is “planning to take action” if CWs are used.
07 DEC 2012   Pentagon starts drafting plans for preemptive strikes.
02 FEB 2013    The New York Times reports Clinton and former CIA Director David Petraeus had crafted a plan to provide rebel groups with lethal arms and training. Obama rejected plan because he was in the middle of re-election and did not want this coming out.
07 FEB 2013    Panetta and CJCS Gen. Dempsey, they agreed with plan to provide arms when questioned by McCain. McCain summarized, “What this means is that the president overruled the senior leaders of his own national security team, who were in unanimous agreement that America needs to take greater action to change the military balance of power in Syria”.
18 MAR 2013  Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) breaks ranks with president and wants to go further in Syria, supporting and creating a safe zone.
19 MAR 2013  Reports of CW use at a town near Aleppo. Assad regime blames the rebels. The White House warns there shall be “consequences”, but we could not confirm the use of CWs.
20 MAR 2013  Obama in a presser says the use of CWs would be a “game changer”.
11 APR 2013   Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ) joins the ranks of lawmakers supporting arms to rebels.
25 APR 2013   White House in a letter to Congress says “with varying degrees of confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin”. The letter states: We go on to reaffirm that the President has set a clear red line as it relates to the United States that the use of chemical weapons or the transfer of chemical weapons to terrorist community. It’s precisely because we take this red line so seriously that we believe there is an obligation to fully investigate any and all evidence of chemical weapons use within Syria. But I think nobody should have any mistake about what our red line is. It is when we firmly establish that there has been chemical weapons use within Syria, that is not acceptable to the United States, nor is the transfer of chemical weapons to terrorist organizations. And the people in Syria and the Assad regime should know that the President means what he says when he set that red line. And keep in mind, he is the one who laid down that marker. He’s the one who directed that we provide this information to the public. 04 SEP 2013    Obama while in Sweden backs away from red line statement. “First of all, I didn't set a red line. The world set a red line when governments representing 98 percent of the world’s population said the use of chemical weapons are [inaudible] and passed a treaty forbidding their use, even when countries are engaged in war. Congress set a red line when it ratified that treaty. Congress set a red line when it indicated that in a piece of legislation entitled the Syria Accountability Act that some of the horrendous things happening on the ground there need to be answered for. So, when I said in a press conference that my calculus about what’s happening in Syria would be altered by the use of chemical weapons, which the overwhelming consensus of humanity says is wrong, that wasn't something I just kind of made up. I didn't pluck it out of thin air. There’s a reason for it.”

History of Syria 1920 to Present

1920: during WWI, Syria and Lebanon were put under a French mandate by the League of Nations.

1925: Syrians revolted against French rule, beginning at Druze Mountain in southern Syria. The revolt spread throughout Syria and parts of Lebanon.

1936: the Franco-Syrian Treaty of Alliance was signed giving a large amount of autonomy of the Syrian people. Despite the treaty, anti-French feelings remained.

1939: France suspended the Syrian Constitution, and with the outbreak of WWII, the French Army garrisoned Syria.

1941: British and Free French forces invaded and occupied Syria. Later that year, the French proclaimed Syria an independent republic.

1943: Shukri al-Kuwati was elected President of Syria.

1944: Complete Syrian independence achieved.

1945: Syria joined the Arab League and became a charter member of the United Nations.

1946: All foreign troops withdrew from Syria.

1948 – 1949: The Arab League waged war on Israel unsuccessfully. This defeat, as well as internal disagreements over unification with Iraq, led to growing doubt in Syria’s parliamentary government.

1949: Syria experienced three coups, bringing briefly to power Col. Husni al-Za’im, suspected to have been placed by the U.S. CIA. Former President Shukri al-Kuwati was briefly imprisoned, then exiled. The third coup was led by Lt. Col. Adib al-Shiskakli, who changed the constitution and ruled as a dictator until 1954 when he lost a presidential election.

After the election a coalition government uniting the People’s National, and Ba’ath parties was formed. Shukri al-Kuwati was again elected as president, marking the rise of the Ba’athist party.

1956: Syria and Egypt signed a pact with the Soviet Union, which supplied arms, tanks and planes in exchange for a foothold for communism. Tension and conflict continued with Israel.

1958: Syria united with Egypt to form the United Arab Republic, but in 1961 they separated, and re-established the Syrian Arab Republic.

1967: During the Arab-Israeli War, Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel.

The socialist Ba’athist Party became divided between continued conflict with Israel and closer ties to the Soviets. Strife led to a bloodless coup led by Gen. Hafez al-Assad, who chose to unite with other Arab states against Israel. Bringing much-needed stability to the nation, Assad was elected to a seven-year term as president in 1971.

1973: A new constitution was approved with the Ba’athists holding a strong majority of seats on the People’s Council. The fourth Arab-Israeli war broke out. Syria and Israel then accepted a UN Security Council cease-fire resolution, but fighting continued into 1974.

1976: As part of a peacekeeping force Syria sent troops into Lebanon. The Syrian troops instead sided with Lebanese Muslims against the Christians.

1982: Israel invaded Lebanon. Again Syrian clashed with Israel and lost. In that same year, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin announced the annexation of the Golan Heights.

1980s: Syria’s growing ties to the Soviet Union and implications it was supporting terrorism created a divide with the western world. With the fall of the USSR in 1991, Syria began to make efforts to re-invent itself.

1991: At the start of the Persian Gulf War, Syria was the first to condemn Iraq for the invasion of Kuwait, and sent 20,000 troops to join coalition forces.

2000: President Hafez al-Assad died. His son, Bashar al-Assad, became Syria’s new president.

2005: Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated. Hariri had long opposed Syria’s interference in Lebanon. His death brought anti-Syrian protests and a successful call to withdraw Syrian troops from Lebanon.

2006: President al-Assad announced support of an Iranian nuclear program.

2007: U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited al-Assad against the wishes of President George W. Bush.

2011: The Arab Spring broke out and so did anti-government protests across the Arab region. Al-Assad’s military replied with force, killing more than 100 and driving thousands of Syrian refugees into Turkey. The Arab League of 22 countries suspended Syria’s membership. The US, EU and others imposed economic sanctions on the al-Assad government in an unsuccessful effort to quell the violence.

2012: The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces was established in Qatar, intended to replace the al-Assad government. The coalition supports the Free Syrian Army. In December, the city of Homs reports of a suspected gas attack.

19 MAR 2013: Reports of gas used in the city of Aleppo.

21 AUG 2013: In the east Damascus neighborhood of Jobar, in an area known to support rebel forces, hundreds of people rushed to local hospitals sickened by, and showing symptoms consistent with, exposure to poison gas. The US, Arab League and others say they have no doubt al-Assad’s forces were responsible.
